Toccata Giocosa for organ

The Toccata Giocosa (Happy Toccata) is a living piece. The continuous eighth pulse and the "pendulum movement" from the fifth / fourth to the "springy" keynote are characteristic. Relationships in thirds also play a certain role in harmony. The first part of the piece is in F major, but always has sections in A flat major. The middle section is then in D minor and F minor. The pendulum movement is expanded in octave jumps in the pedal and a counterpoint is added in the solo trumpet. Here, however, the interval jump from the fifth to the root note is now reversed as a countermovement to the accompaniment. After a transition (with a pendulum movement in fourths in the pedal), the first part is resumed. However, it is then combined with the counterpoint of the middle section before all musical elements sound at the same time at the end.

Intrada Festiva for organ

The Intrada Festiva is determined by unusual harmonic turns in thirds. In the fanfare motif at the beginning, after C major, A flat major sounds directly. This connection also becomes clear in the further structure, as the two frame parts are in C major and the middle part in A flat major. In the middle section, which is more calm and at the same time very expressive, these turns of thirds are continued in a condensed form, before the opening section sounds again at the end.

Audio sample / video of the prelude follows.

Prelude for Organ

At first glance, the solemn prelude has a classic structure and is in D major. The nucleus is a two-measure phrase that is performed on different pitches and keys. The middle section is a chorale in B flat minor that thrives on the contrast between musical tension and relaxation.

Ostinato for organ

The ostinato over the sacrament song "The salvation of the world, Herr Jesu Christ" (GL 498) has a continuous pulse in the pedal in a high register to which a constant bass figure is added. Quiet chords and the actual melody rise above it.
